SUV Rollover Accidents

SUV Rollovers and AccidentsSUVs With Design Flaws Can Be Dangerous

SUV stands for “Sport Utility Vehicle.”  SUV sales have been on the rise over the past twenty years. Extra cargo space and more seating and towing capacity has led consumers with families in mind to opt for SUVs over minivans and station wagons. Manufacturers have adjusted to this increased demand by building more SUVs and creating new lines of SUVs.

SUVs were originally designed and built as an off-road all utility type vehicle. Because more and more people are using these vehicles to shuttle around their families, manufacturers have been forced to redesign their SUVs with this new consumer in mind.  Most manufacturers are now concerned with crash test ratings and increasing vehicle safety features. Although manufacturers have made significant strides in SUV safety, rollover accidents are still a common everyday occurrence.

SUV Accident Statistics

Although SUV rollovers comprise just three percent of all serious motor vehicle crashes, they account for 33% of all passenger vehicle fatalities. Over 8,000 of the 23,000 vehicle occupants killed in 2009 died in rollover crashes. Over the past several years manufacturers have been forced to recall thousands of SUV because a design or manufacturing defect made a certain SUV model more prone to rollover type accidents.

According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Sports Utility Vehicles are three times more likely to be involved in a rollover accident than the standard four-door passenger car. Take this increased likelihood of a rollover and combine it with an SUV that has a seating capacity of eight people and it’s easy to see why SUV rollovers account for so many fatalities.
