If Your Auto Insurance Policy Contains Substitute/Rental Car Coverage

Your own insurance will reimburse you for the cost of substitute transportation if your car was involved in an accident and it is being repaired. Generally, this optional coverage, which comes at an additional price, will reimburse you a total of $15 a day for car rental or substitute transportation costs (i.e. taxi, bus, and train) up to $450. Just because you have this extra rental car provision in your policy it doesn’t mean that rental car companies must rent you a car. They may refuse to rent you a car if you are under a certain age, have poor credit or don’t have the required credit card.

If Your Auto Insurance Policy Does Not Contain Substitute/Rental Car Coverage

Massachusetts civil law requires the party responsible for an accident pay for substitute transportation. However, you will likely be required to pay for the rental car yourself when you turn it in to the rental company. Legally the person responsible for your accident must pay for any substitute transportation but it may take months for them to reimburse you.

Towing Expenses And Storage Fees

Under certain circumstances the insurance company for the party at fault may agree to pay for these fees. However, if they do not agree to pay then you will be personally liable for these fees. It is important that you don’t let theses fees pile up. Storage fees range from $35-$50 a day and can pile up fast.
