Escalator Accidents

Escalator Accident Statistics

Escalator Accident AttorneysThere are approximately 35,000 escalators in the United States. These 35,000 escalators make roughly 105,000,000,000 trips a year with each transporting an average of 12,000 people a year. Most escalators are located in commercial or retail buildings like airports or department stores.

According to The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) escalators caused 24 deaths between 1992 and 2003.   Eight deaths resulted when passengers clothing or footwear got caught at the bottom or the top of the escalator. Falls resulting in head trauma accounted for 16 deaths.

The CPSC estimates that escalator falls cause 4,500 non-life-threatening injures every year. Entrapment injuries (when passengers get caught at the bottom or top of the escalator) are responsible for 1,300 non-life-threatening injures every year.

Escalator accidents have many causes, but no matter what the cause, you should call our law offices today to see if you have a case against a building, property, or business owner.  Complaining to the manager of a store or building is likely to be met with excuses, such as your accident was somehow your fault.
