Elbow Joint And Bone Injuries Caused By AccidentsThe elbow joint is made up of three bones. The bottom of the arm bone (humeral head) connects with the top of the two forearm bones. The top of the radius bone (radial head) and the top of the ulna bone (olecranon) are the two forearm bones that united with the humeral head at the elbow to form the elbow joint.

Radial head fractures are a common fracture and they account for approximately 20% of all elbow fracture injuries. People between ages of twenty and forty are most prone to this type of elbow fracture. Women are more likely to sustain a broken radial head.

This injury is so common because it is often associated with slip and fall accidents. Our instinct tells us to stick an arm or hand out in order to brace for a fall. Often times, when we do this our elbow either sustains a direct impact or an indirect impact which occurs when the impact from a fall travels up the hand, to the forearm and into the elbow joint.

A radial fracture can occur by itself. However, often times this injury occurs with other injuries. If there is enough force to fracture the radial head then there might been enough force to fracture the ulna bone or proximal humerus bone or dislocate the shoulder. A significant radial head fracture could also displace the bone causing it to come in contact with a nerve in the forearm. This could lead to nerve damage or ulnar nerve entrapment.

Signs And Symptoms Of A Radial Head Fracture At The Elbow

Signs and symptoms can vary, however, commonly include:

  • Immediate pain, swelling and tenderness along the inner half of the forearm/elbow joint. The inner half is on the same side as the thumb.
  • Pain and swelling that makes it difficult to bend the arm at the elbow.
  • Pain and swelling that makes it difficult to turn the forearm.
  • Signs of nerve damage consisting of weak, tingling or numb forearms, hands and fingers
